The
Florida Wildflower Program began in the late 1960's
with the emergence of planted crimson clover along a
North Florida roadway. The effect brought considerable
attention and encouraged the Florida Department of Transportation
to develop a wildflower program stressing planting and
preserving native species.
Over
the years the Florida Federation of Garden /Clubs,
Inc. has been the program's biggest supporter through
legislative encouragement and developing awards programs.
Sales
of the Wildflower License Plate began in 2000 with
all the proceeds being used to establish native Florida
wildflower research, educational, and planting grant
programs to municipal, county, and community-based
groups in this state. These grants have funded production
of certified seed, beautify city and county parks
and rights-of-way, and increased appreciation of Florida's
native Wildflowers throughout the State.
Today
the Foundation operates predominately by volunteers
and small contract operations but eventually a centralized
education and research center will be needed to handle
and direct the goals of the Foundation. Become part
of the vision to see native Florida wildflowers and
plants become part of our home landscapes.
